Palo alto is dramatic feature film adapted and directed by Gia Coppola from Dave Franco’s short story collection. My good friend recommended I watch this and being alone on saturday night presented the perfect opportunity to settle in for this beautiful coming of age story.
Palo Alto, is an incredibly potent film, that with Coppola’s skillful directing spins an unexpected engaging light on the sombre script. The film follows the story of numerous protagonists in their own personal stumbles as they interweave, painting a story of love, rebellion and independence.
The script leaves little room for a clear plot however the style creates such an honest portrayal of what it is to grow up, that this hinders little. The film doesn’t comfortably lead the audience through an intensified rendition of cliched pessimism, instead it presents one with the story, in its truthful glory. To take it or leave it.
As Coppola’s first feature film, Palo Alto proves her eye for genuine script-writing and incredible cinematography! Thick with raw and candid shots, what the script lacks in fluidity is more than made up for with profound and purposeful visuals.
Palo Alto holds itself in such a stylistic integrity, despite the angsty cliches and priveliged dissatisfaction shines a unique light on the simplicity of a single intention to make for a very engaging, compelling and honest film.
